About the shot:

Senad and I were on the way to a different location early in the morning, when we passed this scenic spot. We saw a sign from the street and I had some pictures in mind that I’d seen from this bridge on the internet. When we got there the sun was just above the trees and it was lighting up the full color-spectrum of the autumn leaves in a very soft way.

One thing that was a little annoying was that the lake was covered with leaves which had fallen from trees, so the reflection of the bridge in the lake was just not there. But sometimes you just need a bit of luck – I had been on a fishing trip some days before and still had my fishing-boots and a net in the car. So got the stuff and tried to clean the lake by hand. It took a while until it was almost perfectly clean – at least where it was relevant for the picture. Luckily the sun was still very soft, so we had good light for the shot.

I’d chosen a very low camera position to get an almost perfect mirrored scene on the water surface. The bridge looked like a perfect circle and the light was still very good. When Senad was on the bridge, it took us two or three tries to get the shot. There was also no more time for another try because the wind came up and the perfect reflection on the water was gone.

We jumped back to the car and drove towards our originally planned spot. It was an awesome feeling to have shot this picture with more or less pure luck. Without the sign next to the road, we would have passed one of the nicest photo scenes.

About the shot:

This picture was taken 3 hours later than the one below. The fog had disappeard with the strong sun and we just had to wait, till the shadows were at the right angle for this picture.

I used a drone to shoot straight down on Cedric to be able to see through the crystal clear water with all the rocks at the bottom of the lake. Getting the moment with a drone, was not an easy game, but after a couple of tries we got the shot.

About the shot:

In late autumn of 2015, I went to Laax - Switzerland, to shoot a photo I had in mind a long time ago. The idea was to shoot a skateboarder doing a flip trick in a swimming platform in the middle of an alpine lake. When we got there, the whole lake was still covered in heavy fog, but after a while the sun got stronger and made the fog disappear step by step.

We only had a few tries, where there was still fog on the lake before it disappeared. It was one of those pictures, where you just have to be at the right place at the right time.

About the shot:

I shot this unique location a couple months before this action shoot as a landscape picture because I just liked the whole structure and the way it was integrated into the landscape. It’s a viewing platform made of steel that has rusted over the years. You can walk up the stairs to enjoy the view over the lakes that surround the area.

I knew somehow, that there was the potential for it to be a location for an action photo. My first idea was to shoot snowboarding in it, but that was just impossible because of the limited space. I almost gave up on the idea, but then I bumped into Senad Grosic in Berlin one day and we talked a bit about spots and stuff. I showed him the landscape picture and he told me that we need to go back there to see what’s possible.

So Senad and I took a road trip and drove all the way to Senftenberg. We discussed and fine-tuned a plan that would look rad on photo. Senad had the idea to be dressed all white to give it more contrast, because I didn’t want to use flashes to keep the structure as evenly lit as possible. The angle is almost the same angle I chose for the landscape picture. It’s actually an architectural picture with the spice of action sports in it.

About the shot:

I never really found out what this place actually is. It’s just a garden with small hills, where concrete tracks find their way through it in a random way. One part of that garden is like a hilly playground made out of plastic. It was built for a garden-fair close to the Munich fairgrounds.

Anyways, I thought this could look really good from a bird’s-eye perspective if a skateboarder could do a kickflip and the sun would make the trick visible with the skater’s shadow.

I found the spot via Google Earth – a new tool for spot scouting when shooting with a drone! It’s a funny thing to see something from space that looks weird and think it could be your next shoot location.

I showed my idea to Conny and he was stoked to give this a try. The plastic ground was pretty horrible to skate on – it was the same material basketball courts are made of – but Conny is a hell of a skater and so he was still able to fire some flips even on that terrain.

About the shot:

When I got to Berlin in the summer of 2015 and took out my camera, I discovered that I had not deleted my memory card from the last trip where I was shooting surfing in New Zealand.

I just couldn't hold back to try some in-camera-double-exposures with those shots in a very urban area.

About the shot:

Mallorca in the wintertime is just a beauty. I spent a couple of days there to follow Jost Arens escaping the snow that was back home in Germany.

We found a pier, where waves were smashing against the concrete walls and we both thought that this would be a great background for a kickflip. Jost had some issues with the water, because his board got pretty wet after a couple of tries, but I'm super happy that he was still able to perform such a good kickflip.

About the shot:

The surf session was over and Henry Jackson and me went back to our car. The misty coastal fog just got denser and denser: Henry just turned around one last time to enjoy the awesome view over the bay of Gisborne in New Zealand.

It was a very special atmosphere for both of us and I'm happy I triggered the camera one last time at that evening.

Surfing can be amazing and cruel at the same time. One wave you got the perfect ride and 5 minutes later you get caught and tumble trough a washing machine.

About the shot:

It was one of those days, where you open the curtains of your cabin in the morning and all you can see is whiteout. I just hate those moments when you realize that this day will probably just end up with no pictures at all. Knut and me had breakfast and then we decided to take at least one run, to check it out. But lifts where closed for the day.

I looked at the empty lift and liked how the whole thing slightly disappeared into nothing than whiteout. So we built a small jump in the lift line and came back with this picture. Sometimes days are better than they first look.

About the shot:

In 2010 I was taking a walk in the Swedish town Umeå to look for rideable spots. I came along this road and noticed a car driving on the top of the building on the right hand side. It was a parking house with an open deck, so there was plenty of snow up there. The idea was to build a quarterpipe against the chimney and shoot the action from the street view.

I recognized a guy behind my back, who was taking his dog for a walk and I was almost close to talk to him and asking if he could wait a second until Anton had jumped. But somehow I felt it could be a lot stronger picture when the guy and the dog would also be in the picture as well - so I stayed quiet.

About the shot:

I shot this picture of Jordan Mendenhall doing a backside lipslide in the Swedish town Övik. I pretty much liked the structure of the school building in the background.

In 2013 I entered the Red Bull Illume Image Quest and there was a category named "experimental" - which means you can enhance pictures in photoshop or analog. I had no idea, what picture I could submit there, so I played a bit around in photoshop and mirrored the building in the back a lot of times upwards and sideways to make the building really huge. The tricky part was to make the building not too big, so you can still see the action, but also not too small to loose the feeling of the huge building.

Somehow I found the right proportions and somehow I won the experimental category at the Illume.

About the shot:

It was just one of those days. You wake up in the morning and the first thing you do is to check the weather trough your window. You always hope for sun, but quite a lot of times you can see nothing than rain and fog. This was one of those days.

So a couple of hours later, Alex and me just wanted to check it out on the glacier anyways. The weather was still as bad as in the morning, so we had one, two, three coffees up at the mountain restaurant. "Ok - one run", that's what Alex told me, before we entered the total whiteout. Luckily we could find the small picnic table in that huge white nothing.

About the shot:

Xaver and me had a pretty fun day of shooting in the park in Val Senales. When we were done, we decided to have a cup of coffee at the restaurant, that was located at the bottom of the park. We sat there and watched the skiers coming down the hill creating a lot of spray after each turn.

My idea on this picture was to have Xaver alone on he slope that was tracked a lot from the skiers that went down the slope on that day. He tried to do a big stop-turn that creates a huge snowcloud and ride through that cloud he just sprayed.

Due to the many people who were still on the slopes on that day, we had to wait another 20 minutes till the lifts had closed. After that we had the slope for our own, but also just one try to get the shot done, because Xaver wouldn't be able to get up there once again. I got lucky that we didn't need another try.

About the shot:

I found this unique spot in the summer and I really wanted to shoot a snowboard picture there. I told Xaver Hoffmann about the spot and he was also fascinated. My idea to shoot in heavy snowfall wasn't going to be easy, as it only snowed once in this spot last season. So has been pretty much just a one-time chance to get this shot.

I used two big strobes in the background to light up the snowflakes and create a ‘white wall’ where I could capture Xaver’s silhouette as he jumped. To get some light onto the dish, I chose a 4-second exposure time to get some light from the moon.

Overall, I'm pretty happy that we made it there that day!

This picture was also judged as the overall winning shot of the "Red Bull Image Quest 2013" and "The Open of Photography".

About the shot:

I had the idea to shoot a snowboard waterslide from underneath the surface a couple of years back, but I found out pretty fast that it wasn't as easy as I thought. At the first attempts, I tried to trigger the camera - that was in a water-resistant bag - with radio triggers, but the signal just never reached the camera. In the next attempt, I tried to fire the camera with a cable, but this also didn't work out and I ended up losing the camera to water damage. In my last try, I knew that I would have to go down into the water myself. So I rented water-housing and diving equipment and went to a pretty perfect location in Munich, Germany for the shoot.

The idea was to shoot upwards where the rider would be, in the so-called ‘Snell’s window’. Looking upwards underwater, this is the circular area of light on the surface caused by refraction of light entering the water.

In my image you can see the rider and the sky through that window. In other parts of the surface, the total reflection effect takes place and mirrors the underwater world. The communication with the rider was also a bit difficult, because we both were in two different worlds and we could not just raise our hands when both of us were ready. But in the end, everything turned out way better than I expected!

About the shot:

When it gets summer, you have to go up north to catch the last piece of snow in Europe. I shot this picture in Folgefonna - Norway in July 2007. At the bottom of the slopes, the melt-water had created a huge glacier lake that was just screaming for a waterslide.

I met Sebastian Krohn in Folgefonna for the first time and he told me that he was hurt and could not ride the jumps, so he just went watersliding day after day. At the end, he got so good at it, that he was even able to do two turns on the lake before he rode back out into the snow.

This picture is still one of my all time favourites, because it Sebastian is making watersliding look so easy.

About the shot:

This is probably one of the gnarliest action, that I've ever shot. Anton Gunnarsson told me about the spot, but when I saw it in real life for the first time, I just couldn't believe what Anton had in mind.

But after we talked about it for a while and he told me that he definitely want's to do it and I had the feeling that he was a 100% committed to it. I just trusted Anton, that he knows what he's doing. For sure one of the scariest moments of my shooting-carrier.

About the shot:

André Tröltzsch told me about that spot a couple of times and when winter came, we definitely wanted to give it a try. The setup was not easy at all, because first Munich doesn't get too much snow anyways, second we had to carry a lot of snow with a push-car onto the bridge for hours and third, all the people who came by with just no idea what we were doing up there, asked so many fun questions.

After a couple of tries, we got a feeling for this wallride and we just had to wait for a train, that came by every couple of minutes. I'm pretty happy that we all got the timing right.

About the shot:

On a late road trip in June 2010 to Norway, we drove up a long glacier pass near the town Lom. The snow was almost gone and we could barely find any spots, but when we came around a corner we found a natural halfpipe that just stood on the last piece of snow on the peak of the pass.

We thought a lot how this pretty perfect shaped pipe could have been created, because it was definitely not built by hand - but we never really understood it and till today, I have no idea why the snow melted exactly like this.

Anyways, it was pretty fun to ride. What I discovered later, when I saw the picture in big for the first time on the screen, was a group of glacier-tourists who were captured as well on the blue glacier in the background, pretty much straight above the rider. I love this fact, because it gives you so much to discover on the picture when you have it in a pretty big size on your wall.

About the shot:

It was snowing heavily for days at Arlberg in January 2012. The avalanche risk was super high and there was no way we could go into the backcountry. So we decided to just pre-built a couple of jumps right next to the village and roads to stay out of the trouble.

When the weather got better on the next day, Basti Rittig just went for this bs 540 indy on the first try. The funny thing about this picture is that it looks like we are in the deep backcountry but what you can't see is the house that is just next to the landing on the right side of the framing.

About the shot:

Ruka - Finland is probably the coldest place I've ever shot snowboarding. When our crew came there in December 2010, the temperatures were around -30°C all day long and the sun was only there between 10am and 2 pm.

But this scenario has also something good, because the snow never melts everything just looks like the inside of a fridge. A totally deep frozen winter-wonder-world.

About the shot:

When the foggy days get more common on the Bavarian lakes, you know that summer is over and winter is just a couple weeks away. The water is now too cold for a swim in the lake and you can't hear the children's voices anymore that used to play on those slides. It's pure silence.

About the shot:

Shooting in the morning is just magic. You can see from minute to minute the nature awaken. First, there is just fog and you can barely see - than the sun comes up and as it gets stronger, it wins the fight against the fog more and more - finally the sun is out and the wind picks up and the lake is alive.

I was happy to capture this moment when mother nature was still asleep.

About the shot:

Finish nights can be summed up in just two words: Cold and magic - I've never seen any other location where you constantly feel like you live on the inside of a fridge.

But due to the fact, that Finland in the wintertime is mostly covered in darkness there is always artificial light coming from somewhere that creates a very magic light situation.

I shot this picture at the top of a mountain looking towards the Russian border. The trees in the foreground where lighten up by the lights of the ski area close by.

About the shot:

This picture of the mountains in the area around Garmisch-Partenkirchen was shot with an infrared camera. This camera has the ability to see what our eye can't see - the infrared light. Every piece of grass and other plants that do photosynthesis reflect the light back in a red colour.

With this camera I was able to shoot those "bleeding" mountains.

About the shot:

The winter was almost gone in New Zealand when I arrived at Lake Wanaka in the spring of 2013. On a walk at the lake, I found this wild tree that was growing in the middle of the water close to the beach.

I decided to shoot this picture with a long-time-exposure during an overcast day to flatten out the water and the clouds in the sky to give the picture a bit of quietness. On that day the wind was blowing pretty heavily, so this technique was just perfect to get even a bit of motion-blur in the branches on the tree.

After the shooting, I had wet feet up to the knees from the cold lake-water because I got surprised by some waves that rolled in from the lake.

About the shot:

I crossed the Öresundbridge so many times when I took the car from Germany up to the northern part of Sweden, I can't even count it.

The bridge connects Sweden and Denmark and it's an incredible construction built over the ocean. When I took the picture in the spring of 2012 the ice on the water was almost gone, but some small parts were still floating in the water.

I decided to shot a long-time-exposure to make those ice blocks in the water invisible and get a flatted out water to get all the focus on the bridge construction.

About the shot:

When I came to Raisting the first time, I was just fascinated by those huge antennas that just stand in the middle of an open field right in the beautiful Bavarian landscape.

I came to this magical place a couple of times, just to shoot those big dishes under a lot of different light situations. On this day the weather was overcast and it gave the whole scenery a pretty nice flat light.

This is also the satellite dish where I shot the overall winning picture for the Red Bull Illume 2013, a couple months later.

About the shot:

This picture is also from the same day as "Raisting I". I liked the contrast between the really nice nature with corn fields and the pure, clean architecture of the dishes.

The right one is also the satellite dish where I shot the overall winning picture for the Red Bull Illume 2013, a couple months later.

About the shot:

Queenstown in New Zealand is a crazy place. My first thought was that this city is like bringing the city Portland from the USA to Norway. Just a good vibe all over the streets with an amazing nature backdrop.

This picture describes the feeling pretty perfectly. I found this guy playing a mobile-piano right at the waterfront of Queenstown. On the first sight he played there to make some money from the people passing by. But the longer I watched and listened to him, the more I got sure, that he played there because it was just his thing.

He was in his own world with his music and that amazing view.

About the shot:

The funny thing about this picture is that I was standing on the great wall of China when I took it. Pretty much everybody else was shooting the great wall, but the view away from it was incredible.

You could see so far and the little bit of moisture in the air created sharp mountain lines between every mountain-chain that was visible. When the sun was setting, I was able to capture that moment. I came back to this place 3 more years in a row and never had such an amazing view and light.

About the shot:

On a trip to Sicily in Italy I shot this picture of a sailing boat close to the city Catania.

The sun was already pretty low and so the ocean was not really lit up. The only thing that caught pretty much all the sunlight was this white sailboat on the ocean.

Without a cloud in sight the picture turned out exactly how I had it in mind.

About the shot:

Another picture that I shot in the winter months close to the Öresundbridge in Sweden. In this bay , there are a lot of sandbanks that can change their location pretty quickly due to heavy winter storms.

On a foggy day I discovered this shipwreck a couple of hundred meters away from the coastline that hit a sandbank and was left by the crew. I took some photos that were pretty ok, but when the bird flew into this shot, it made the whole scenery perfect for my picture.
